Shepeard Community Blood Center’s Life Across America Bicycle Ride
Shepeard Community Blood Center hosted a bicycle ride today in honor of Larry Fredrick and his cross country bicycle ride called, “Life Across America.” This summer, Larry and his daughter, Adella, rode 3,850 miles in 52 days to draw awareness to the need for volunteer blood donors and to support community blood centers such as Shepeard Community Blood Center.
While on duty, August 21, 1982, Larry was permanently disabled when a DUI driver, speeding at 65 MPH, struck him as he was speaking to a stopped motorist. The outcome was a need for 110 units of blood and nine major surgeries to repair extensive injuries. You can find out more at www.lifeacrossamerica.com.
Mayor Deke Copenhaver, Larry Frederick, and area bicycle riders joined Shepeard, local police officers from Columbia and Richmond County, and representatives from three area bicycle shops, Andy Jordan, Chain Reaction, and Outspokin at Shepeard’s Evans Center at 4329 Washington Road for a ride at 6:00 AM this morning. The group rodede from Shepeard’s Evans Center to the Shepeard’s Augusta Blood Center at 1533 Wrightsboro Road in Augusta.
At the Augusta Shepeard Center, Mayor Deke Copenhaver issued an official proclamation that August 10, 2010 is Life Across America Blood Donation Day and will present the proclamation to Larry. Participants in the ride and well wishers enjoyed a light breakfast while Larry recounted his amazing story.
Shepeard Community Blood Center’s bicycle ride started with registration at 5:30 AM and start time of 6:00 AM at the Shepeard Evans Center located at 4329 Washington Road – next to Fairway Ford. The bicycle trail followed Evans to Locks Road to the Savannah River Pavilion, to the Augusta Canal Pump Station, and ending at Shepeard’s Augusta Center located at 1533 Wrightsboro Road, 13.5 miles total.
Shepeard Community Blood Center has partnered with 3 local cycling shops: Andy Jordan’s Bicycles, Chain Reaction, and Outspokin. After the ride, two lucky people will have their names drawn from all cycling entrants to win 1 of 2 $500 gift certificates to the local cycling shops. The two lucky cyclists who rode with Shepeard today and won the gift certificates are Carol Lee and Robert Johnson! Congratulations!!
In addition to those blood donors who rode in Shepeard's Life Across America Bike Ride, Shepeard had close 700 blood donors to donate blood in support of Life Across America! Shepeard randomly selected one of these Earl Lenderman from Aiken, SC to win the third gift certificate from one of the three local cycling shops.
