PROGRAMS AND PROMOTIONS

Educational Programs 2010-2011

Shepeard's Educational Programs are designed to provide students with a valuable community involvement experience and education about blood donation, while providing an opportunity to receive funding for equipment and supplies for their school.

High School Heroes Program

This year, we have provided greater opportunity for more schools to win by restructuring our program to reward improvement.  Schools will compete against their own acheivements from the 2009-2010 school year.  Win equipment and supplies for your school.  Increase the number of donors over last year by:

• 5% and win $250.
• 10% and win $500.
• 15% and win $750.
• 20% and win $1,000.

Schools will also be split into divisions, according to how many students are enrolled as of September 15, 2010.  Division Champions will be determined by the school in each division that has the largest percent increase.  Division Champions will be awarded a trophy, as well as an additional $1,000 in equipment and supplies for their school.

Divisions:
• Division 1: <350 Students
• Division 2:  350-599 Students
• Division 3:  600-999 Students
• DIvision 4:  1000-1299 Students
• Division 5:  1300+ Students

Schools must host a minimum of 2 blood drives between August 15, 2010 and May 15, 2011.  Schools that are competing for the first time that achieve 10% of their total enrollment will win $500.

Junior Heroes Program
(For Elementary Schools)

PTOs will have an opportunity to earn funding for equipment and supplies for their schools.  By hosting a minimum of 2 blood drives, schools can earn up to $250 in equipment and supplies ( $50 for every 20 people who present to donate) The drives must be school sponsored.  They can be held during PTO meetings, before or after school, at school carnivals, whenever and where ever you choose to hold them!

Save Our Summer Weekly Give Away Program - June through August 2010

Each summer blood supplies fall dangerously low here in the CSRA and across the nation because schools and colleges (which supply 20 percent of the blood supply) are closed for the summer and faithful donors from all walks of life break their donation routine during these critical months to take vacations and to enjoy summer activities.

“Unfortunately, the need for blood does not take a vacation,” says Mistie Harris, Shepeard’s Public Relations Coordinator, “Every two seconds someone needs blood and 1 out of every 7 hospital patient needs blood! “

As a reminder to our donors of just how essential they are to the health of local patients, Shepeard is having a S-0-S – Save Our Summer Fun Pack drawing EACH WEEK for this entire summer. Each Summer Fun Pack is filled with restaurant certificates and admissions to summer attractions and is valued at $500.”  Click here to see winners!

The Free Lipid Profile Program

-- After your third donation in a calendar year, you will receive a voucher for a free Lipid Profile in the mail.  (Two free Lipid Profiles per calendar year.)

-- A letter will accompany the voucher explaining what to do to take advantage of this free medical test.

-- Donors who choose to take advantage of this benefit will take the voucher to a Shepeard Center or Doctors Hospital to get the blood drawn.

Life Savers Club

The Life Savers Club was established to give donors an opportunity to make a significant contribution to their community and reach a personal milestone at the same time. Due to the increasing demand for blood products from local hospitals and the relatively short shelf life of blood, we need many dedicated donors willing to give blood at least four times a year.
The Life Savers Club is a group of those donors who make a commitment to donate at least four units of blood a year. At the end of 12 months, those individuals that have completed their four donations will receive recognition and an award for their accomplishment!

We typically celebrate those who have achieved membership in the Life Savers Club at our annual Time to Care Blood Give-In every December.

For more information about how to be a Life Savers Club Donor, please email or call Linda Petersen at 706-737-4551.

Cradle Club

The Cradle Club is a special group of blood donors who help infants who need blood transfusions. The Cradle Club was established to recognize those donors who “Give Blood for all the Little Reasons”. Cradle Club members receive special t-shirts and recognition throughout the year.

Individuals who donate blood for babies must have type O positive or O negative blood. These individuals must also be CMV negative. This simply means the donor must test negative for a virus called cytomegalovirus. In the world we live in, we are exposed to a variety of harmless viruses every day. These exposures do not affect the adult population, but they can be very harmful or fatal to delicate infants and patients that are severely ill.  Although CMV negative blood is commonly referred to as “Baby Blood”, many other patients desperately need this blood as well.

Additionally, a donor can be exposed at anytime to the CMV, thereby making him or her ineligible to donate for babies in the future. For this reason, we are in constant need of new CMV donors. If you have a special place in your heart for babies, please contact Shepeard Blood Center at 706-737-4551 and become a baby blood donor today!
